More and more popular though in interior design is exposed brick internally, which is a different style of brick than we mostly see outside. The brick on new build estates and developments is often used because of the efficiency in making it, creating a low price point but not necessarily a priority on what the end product looks like.
Exposed brick internally is based on aging, if you’re lucky enough to live in a home where there is brick on the internal side of your walls, it will look different. These bricks will most likely be from older manufacturing methods, meaning greater character, but they’ll also have aged and been exposed to other factors such as plaster to give a different look. It’s these bricks that we are inspired by for our internal brickwork.
Most homes or businesses don’t have the benefit of being able to expose brickwork though, and even those that do can find it to be very hit and miss, as these walls weren’t built to be seen so can contain a patchwork brick collection, not laid for looks but just for structure.
You don’t have to lay a brick wall, with all the hassle that entails in order to get this look. Brick slips are popular because they are the real thing, they have the colours, textures and feel of real brick, because that’s what they are! You can choose from a reclaimed style which recreates that feel of exposed brickwork, with plaster effects, uneven shapes and a unique charm, but with products made to current manufacturing standards.
There are a few popular locations for this brickwork – inside a chimney breast or as a fireplace is a firm favourite as it’s somewhere you’d expect to see brick. The kitchen is as always a place where design is most considered, and brick slips work very well there (although you may consider painting on a brick sealant to keep out moisture). The most impact you can have though is a full brick slip feature wall, giving prominence to the product and making something that will give everyone a ‘wow’ as they enter the room.
In order to make this a reality, you’ll need to choose the brick slip, but also remember the mortar colour as that can give a different feel. Brick slips are then just tiled on to the wall to create the same impact as a true brick wall would, but without the hassle. For best results, think about how a real brick wall would look and make sure you stay with that- so no skirting, no coving and use ‘corner tiles’ to go around any external corners.
Once you have the brick wall you want, however you achieve it, make sure you pair the right things with it to maximise the effect, whether an industrial style with metals and exposed wood, or more of a contemporary feel, the reclaimed style brick slips or genuine exposed brick will work all around due to the aged natural finish they have.
